Humane Education
What is Humane Education?
Humane Education teaches people how to accept and fulfill their responsibility to companion animals, such as cats and dogs, and all forms of animal life. It explains the consequences of irresponsible behavior and encourages people to see the value of all living things.
The OSPCA currently offers two humane education programs for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
Each presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour and includes a corresponding video and (if possible) safe 'hands-on' introduction to a temperament tested dog. In addition, a comprehensive package of related material is left behind for the teacher and students.
"Kindness Counts"
For children in Kindergarten to Grade 3.
A short video is shown about how to care for cats, dogs and small animals. Through demonstration and hands on activities, students learn how to gently handle an animal, learn about the animal's needs and the similarities and differences between humans and animals. A dog or cat can be brought into the classroom to allow the children a chance to interact with different types of animals. Children are encouraged to ask questions and participate in the presentation.
"Bite Free"
For children in Kindergarten to Grade 6.
A short video is shown about how to correctly meet and approach a dog. The children are shown how to meet a dog in a safe manner whether the dog is on leash with an owner or running loose. The presentation also explains who to contact if the child or parent happens to find a dog running loose.
The main focus is proper interaction with dogs, and how to avoid getting bitten. The children are encouraged to try out their new skills on a dog that is brought in to the classroom during the presentation.
We also offer informative shelter tours for school classes or childrens groups. Please contact our Humane Education Coordinator, Charlotte McInnis, at the Oromocto and Area SPCA to book a presentation.
Any dog brought into the classroom is first tested to make sure that they are of sound temperment and a well mannered animal. If at anytime the teacher or group leader would like to see the test performed on these presentation dogs, please ask as the owner is required to have it on them during all classroom presentations.
